Moles - New York, New Jersey, Connecticut

Appearance

Moles have long, cylindrical noses, tiny eyes, no visible ears and paddle-like front feet with large claws that allow them to tunnel through the soil. They have velvety gray to brown fur and stubby, hairless tails.
Moles can range from 4 to 6 ½ inches long, and usually weigh between 3 and 6 ounces.

Habitat

Moles can dig tunnels at a rate of approximately 18 feet per hour-that’s over 400 feet per day! Moles can travel through existing tunnels at rates of up to 80 feet per minute.

Diet

Moles primarily feed on earthworms, and can eat up to 100% of their body weight in a day.

Mole Reproduction

Moles can quickly colonize and spread into neighboring properties if not properly treated. The longer a mole is allowed to tunnel and set up its habitat, the harder it will become to control.

Other

Moles possess a keen sense of danger, and therefore can be very challenging to trap. If scared or disturbed, moles may temporarily leave an area but will usually return.
