Grain Beetle

The rusty and flattened grain beetles are a reddish-brown color and appear to be very flat and close to the ground, hence their name flattened beetles. They are typically about an inch to an inch and half long with antennae almost as long as their body length. They are very similar in appearance and do similar amount of damage so distinguishing the two isn’t a main concern. The Sawtooth Grain beetle is smaller in length, only about 1/10th of an inch long. They are blackish and color and flat such as the Flattened Beetle mentioned above.

As it states in their name, these beetles live in areas where there is an abundance of grain. Moist grain is a perfect place for grain beetles to lay they eggs. The abunace of food allows the larvae to feed and grow into beetles. The larvae for the Flattened beetles grow up to about an inch in length and the Sawtooth about a 1/10th of an inch.

How do they affect me?

The beetles themselves are not clean insects and themselves can contaminate the food. Yet it is the larvae of the beetles that can do the most harm to us. They consume and disguise their food in the grain. Once they start to reproduce these beetles can start multiplying in large numbers. They are known to destroy enormous amounts of grain from restaurants, warehouses, and households. Do not eat grain that has been contaminated.

What should I do?

If you’re a home owner who eats grains and rice, make sure you store it in a dry area. Don’t keep it in the garage and only keep it in the basement if you have a dehumidifier keeping the air dry. The same goes for restaurant owners, check your inventory often and keep it to a minimum. The more you have the chance you have of having an infestation.Grain Beetles are covered under our Home Pest Prevention Program. Please contact us if you are interested.
